when i cough it tastes weird in the back of my throat. also when i swallow water it has the same weird taste in the back of my throat. i never cough up phlegm or anything like that though. what could this be? thanks

More info needed: "Weird taste" is not a diagnosis, it's a sign. For diagnosis sis you will have to have hour throat examined, your overall health reviewed, your medications, evaluated, your medical history reviewed, your oral health evaluated, your diet evaluated, you need to be screened for allergies, you may require I'm aging and/or lab tests. 
Treatment will depend on diagnosis.

: Your symptoms may be due to dry air in the bedroom. Try using a humidifier in the bedroom.

No Spitting!: Please do not spit. The stomach can easily digest whatever mucus comes from the nose, sinuses, lungs, etc...  There is no reason to spit.

Clear nasal drainage: positional cough with phlegm can be caused by several things.  It could be postnasal drainage from allergies or could be a sign of more serious lung or heart issue.  If it persists a doctor should examine you and listen to your heart and lungs.  Clear nasal drainage could just be a sign of nasal allergies or nasal irritation. It could also be cerebrospinal fluid leaking but doubt this if no trauma

Probable flu: Symptoms
 you describe appear to be viral. Cannot totally rule out a bacterial cause. Common cold usually does not cause extensive aches/pains. You might find that your temperature goes higher at night. The best thing to do is stay away from others to keep them well, gargle with regular Listerine, use Lozenge with benzocaine, take vitamin C and OTC cough medicine. Not improved  in 2 days  see MD.

You cannot: A 19 mo old child does not have enough coordination to cough, feel sputum and spit. They usually swallow, and may cause stomach irritation. If your son has a lot of runny nose and swallow it, and hi has rattle in the throat, you may use suction bulb to suck out the junk in the nose, so that he does not swallow it to begin with.

Possibilities...: If you have a productive cough chronically, you may have chronic bronchitis, a form of COPD typically caused by smoking. You should see your doctor as this can be treated and symptoms lessened. If you still smoke, smoking cessation is also needed and your doctor can help with this as well.
