Drugs: Both drugs are bentos but different. Xanax is very short acting.and more useful for acute reactions. If taken 3-4 times daily, its impact is long gone before you take the next dose. Klonopin is long acting and will be still effective between doses. Both should be monitored carefully as they can be habituating. Don't mix with alcohol and they can cause balance issues.

They are similar but xanax (alprazolam) is shorter acting and more potent than Clonazepam whixh is less strong and action lasts longer. Xanax (alprazolam) also can lead to addiction more than clonazepam.

Within an hour: Clonazepam is a longer acting drug than Xanax (alprazolam) and its' effects are less immediately evident.  However, depending on your size, diet, metaboisim, etc. it usually takes less than an hour to begin working.  The efffects will be more subtle, in that the purpose is to maintain balance over time rather than stopping a panic attack.

Yes: those medications, benzodiazepines, are like cousins of each other, they can be used as substitutes in a pinch.  However they can also be synergistic (additive) in its effect so stick with one to see a better effect.

See below: The best solution is to review your medication use at a local urgent care, so you have a safe solution. This is especially true if you have been regularly taking xanax (alprazolam) and have other medications and illnesses. Although Clonazepam is in the same medication class as xanax (alprazolam), it lasts much longer and the doses are not equivalent. So it is not a good idea for you to swap between the two using guesswork.

Both are benzos: I would imagine that a toxicology screen should report the presence of benzos as just that and not necessarily distinguish between one and another....at least I've never seen it reported out that way where I send the majority of my patients in for labs.

i've been taking clonazepam for a few years. having an mri tues. & they said they'd give me xanax for my claustrophobia--is that safe to do one time?
