if you aspirate a little bit of food, will you always get aspiration pneumonia or is there a chance you wont? how likely is it?  what would be the first sign? i was eating very creamy split pea soup and it went down the wrong pipe. possible?

Aspirated food: It actually is unusual to develop pneumonia after minor aspirations as the food mainly has just been in the trachea and not down into lungs. The trachea has one of the most responsive reflexes in the body. If even a little bit of foreign material gets in there you cough like crazy. This is to PREV it from getting down into the lungs and setting one up for possible infection developing.

i got fluid and a little bit of food down my windpipe into my lungs. could this develop into pneumonia?

It's possible.: It is certainly possible that you could develop pneumonia from aspiration of solid and liquid material. Try to cough out as much of it as you can. If you do start coughing up phlegm, running fevers, or becoming short of breath, see your doctor immediately. Good luck.

You should see if: your throat is swollen for some reason, as tonsils or the posterior wall of the throat itself can be swollen due to allergies or anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction).  You may also have a polyp or infection of your throat such as thrush.  You should see a healthcare provider as soon as possible if this effect does not go away within the next 3 days. SPRAIN: You injured your mcl or your medial meniscus. Either way ice, ice, ice and a knee brace, see a doctor as you may need an MRI poss surgical intervention if knee is unstable, locks or continues to hurt. Baby this knee for a little while, rest it.

Aspiration: Mechanical aspiration or choking is very common and a good cough reflex is usually all that is needed. Sometimes, due to small food particles may result in prolonged irritative cough until the foreign body gets dislodged. I would still suggest that you mention this episode with the subsequent panic attack to your treating physician.
