&gt;90% of DS is caused: By an error in cell division in which  an egg or sperm cell accidentally gains an extra copy of chromosome (chr.)  21 before joining the other to form a fertilized egg. Both parents  can be tested for a balanced translocation, rearrangement of genetic material between a chr.21 & another chr. That has a 3% risk if from dad & a 12% risk if from mom of becoming imbalanced if passed on to their child.

Unknown: The heart is a very complex organ. We still do not fully understand how the normal heart develops in the fetus. We understand even less about what causes the heart to develop abnormally. Although 40-50% of patients with Down syndrome have congenital heart dis., and we know what causes down syndrome, we do not yet understand why this leads to heart defects (likely due to abnormal gene expression).

Mistake in chromosom: During the formation of normal eggs or sperm the chromosome(c) pairs are supposed to split leaving one of each in the egg/sperm.At conception the joining of egg/sperm brings together the pair &  as tissue grows it has the proper number in each cell. With ds the egg has a pair of 21c and at conception a triple 21 is created. All cells derived after will have an extra 21 & become a ds child.
