Both of you should be checked out for any possibilities of disease transmission that you are unaware of.  Your partner's statement that he is not HIV positive doesn't cover the gamut of problems you could both experience.  See your physician and urge him to do the same.  Herpes is easily transmitted!

If it's herpes labialis (blisters on the lip) you could give it to your partner. If it's a sore inside the mouth it is probably an aphthous ulcer or traumatic injury and is not contagious.
