Common causes include lack of fitness, obesity, asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, congestive heart failure, blood clots, anemia, thyroid disease, acidosis from any cause, hyperventilation, broken rib, tumors, and on and on. SLE: You definitely have to be re-evaluated by a rheumatologist.  SLE can affect the lungs and pleura which can cause shortness of breath. Hemolytic anemia is another  complication of SLE and if you are anemic you can also get shortness of breath.

Radiographs: I would suggest having imaging studies performed, the use of Ibuprofen for muscular pain and seeing your PCP. The chest wall muscles and ribs are used during breathing, but your pain upon inhalation should be further evaluated.

Go to ER: Especially if this started very recently.. Important to rule out things like pneumonia or pulmonary embolism.

Depends: Treatment for breathing problems depends on the cause.   Usually inhalers work best, sometimes pills are helpful sometimes injections are given.  Get to the doctor, get tested or at least checked out and treated.

Clarify? See doctor!: Ongoing problem or recent? Fever? Chest pain? Otherwise sick? Age? Other health issues? Could be anything from carrying excess weight in the midsection (make it difficult to take a deep breath while lying down), to heart failure or fluid in lungs from infection or tumor. You should definitely see a doctor to get this checked out soon.

Orthopnea: The symptom is called orthopnea. The way to find out if it's heart failure is to go to a doctor and find out if it's heart failure. The doctor may be able to tell you right there and then or (s)he may have to run some tests.
