Surgical consult: I feel it's important for you to be evaluated by an abdominal surgeon for advice. It's likely that repeated intususceptions have somehow disturbed the motility of the duodenum. I don't think this is simply a localized Ileus.
I'm concerned about the dilated loop which may become increasingly symptomatic or worsen.

Almost anything: Any illness, particularly in the abdomen, can cause an ileus.  Common examples--urinary infection, pneumonia, injury, broken bones, any localized area of inflammation in the abdomen, including appendicitis, diverticulitis, viral illness.

Multiple causes: Your son has a ileus.  He has most likely had a recent illness.  He may have a respiratory virus etc.  This can cause ileus.  Electrolytes like potassium being abnormal can also cause ileus.  It does not mean blockage.  Time and support usually work.  Narcotic medication can also cause ileus.  A diet high in fiber may help minimize ileus but treating underlying cause is still important.

Ileus: implies decreased or absent bowel activity, characterized by a lack of bowel sounds. It could cause pain via constipation, bloating, or lead to obstruction. The duration depends on the cause, which includes surgery, certain medications, illnesses, and neurologic disorders.

Ileus after ESI: No. But the use of pain medications (narcotics, ssri, neurontin/lyrica) or muscle relaxers can certainly cause these symptoms. Other cause would be significant inactivity which could contribute.

Ileus is not related: To peptic ulcer disease unless there is some perforation involved in which case patient would be very sick. Ileus is usually related to adhesions from prior surgeries, any infection inside the abdomen, pneumonias, urinary tract infections, pelvic surgery, immobility and certain neurologic conditions such as parkinsons.

See below: Ileus is slowing of activity of the intestines. This results in nausea, maybe recurrent vomiting, inability to eat, increasing abdominal distension, lack of bowel movements. Can be associated with infections or a viral illness. Symptoms are very similar to a bowel obstruction & needs an evaluation with a doctor for a full medical evaluation.
