my daughter is 5. she recently had a very swollen and painful foot for no reason. no know injury. her esr was 95. what could cause this?

Inflammation: Swelling and elevated esr could signal an infection either in the joint or bone, or an immune type arthrtitis like rheumatoid arthritis, lyme disease, serum sickness like reaction.  History as to recent drug intake, other symptoms like skin rash or sore throat, fever or swollen lymph nodes may give clues, in addition to other labs or imaging studies.

Many Possibilites: Several things to consider- is she wearing tight shoes or socks. Has she been bitten by any insect? Is there any redness or do you feel any redness? Best course of action- have your daughter seen by her doctor- she will ask you these questions and more, also do a thorough exam. All the best.

Get checked: You'll want to get checked and treated right away.  Although unlikely given the short description, infected joint needs to be ruled out.  Also, the cold extremity is very concerning for vascular compromise.  Follow your instinct, but you may consider urgent care today or at least placing a call to your primary care doc or orthopedist. Many possibilities! : Gout, infection, water retention, sprain, arthritis, just to name a few.  A lot depends on the history and physical exam, so I would recommend seeing your doctor to determine the cause!

Just one side?: Unilateral swelling without trauma could suggest venous insufficiency or thrombophlebitis. A venous doppler or ultrasound can help make the diagnosis. If there is redness and warmth especially around the great toe joint this could an acute gouty attack. Infection is less likely especially w/o a skin ulceration or open wound. See a doctor.

Unilateral foot : Swelling?  I assume it is not painful.  It could be lymphedema, caused by anything that interrupts lymph drainage from the foot.  If you are diabetic, you could have decreased sensation in the foot and traumatize it repeatedly without knowing, condition called charcot's foot.  But not likely with normal mri, which is a very accurate imaging test.  I am stumped, sorry.

It is plausible : You have a clot in one of the veins in the foot. Because, the pain is severe and no trauma, i would visit a podiatrist.
