Oral Cancer: There is no one appearance. It can be small and innocuous looking or large and menacing in appearance. As trained dentists, we usually cannot know in the early stages whether or not a lesion is benign or cancerous (or not a neoplasm). That's why we need to remove and biopsy most lesions. All lesions that are not gone after two weeks warrant  a visit to an oral surgeon for an evaluation.

Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Shingles/COPD/diabet: oral shingles may look like cold sores of the mouth, but cancer of the mouth usually starts as tumor(varies in size from lentil to a bean size) that may ulcerate later..shingles improve in few days and may take a week or two to heal. oral cancer does not heal..shingles usually multiple small superficial sores  but oral cancer usually single and deep

To : To answer your question one would have to know the size and location of the defect in question, how the cancer was treated (i.e., surgery radiation, both?), what are his underlying medical problems and general state of health, age and expectations for functional recovery of your husband, and general prognosis for tumor free survival. There are many factors that are considered when recommending a plan of reconstruction and the expectations that you would face and recovery times would vary depending on the technique chosen.
