Depends: All oncologists are trained to diagnose, stage, and treat cancers specific to their specialty. As a radiation oncologist, I am trained to participate in the multidisciplinary management and treatment of all solid tumors. Our board certification is based on training of all solid tumor sites.However, some oncologists may decide to specialize in an area of their choice particularly in academic center.

Gyn onc: Any can but I would recommend a gynecologic oncologist

Accepted Answer

Varies: The treatment of lymphoma depends on the type of lymphoma, its stage (extent), its features on tissue stains, lab and imaging findings, and age and general health of the patient. Treatment can range from watchful waiting/observation, radiation therapy, chemotherapy/immunotherapy, and high-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell rescue (transplantation).

Testing: specialized bloodwork including possible biopsy would be some of the test that they would be used to diagnose leukemia.

Depends: We all have different levels of experience.  In general most OB/GYNs can treat VIN2, but if your GYN isn't comfortable and wants to refer you to a GYN Oncologist, its fine too.

Cancer specialist: Oncologists are cancer specialists, so they diagnose and treat cancer.

Results first: The results of the biopsy will dictate further work up and treatment.

Your PCP is enough: Dear Emmy:
Given that you have been NED for 12 years, your follow up would be more appropriately done by a regular primary care physicians. As oncologists, we typically only follow breast cancer patients for 5 years and at the most 10 years for those that need medications like tamoxifen for 10 years. my father is diagnosed with prostate cancer and now the radiation oncologist prescribed him to take the cosidex pill and then lupron injection. his in intermediate stage with gleason score 7, is it really the best way to treat his cancer?

: If your dad does not want surgery and prefer radiation therapy, he will be referred to a radiation oncologist who will discuss the radiation modalities so your dad can decide. Rad oncologist does not prescribe pills unless your dad wants radiation tx but oncologist wants to shrink the prostate first with hormon tx. Prostate cancer Gleason score 7 should be treated and your dad decides the Rx type.
