Stop smoking: The best way for you to improve your stamina and endurance with running will be to stop smoking.  The effects of smoking on your exercise tolerance are reversed relatively soon after you stop, so it is definitely worth it for many reasons.  Also, try to increase your distance steadily over time, alternating a slower pace with faster sprints to build both aerobic and anaerobic endurance.

No: although you may have more trouble with cough after using the inhaler.  It is NOT nicotine that causes damage to the lungs, it is the other substances in tobacco smoke - "tars" are organic compunds produced by tobacco combustion, plus things like carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and many other additives, flavorings, preservatives etc. I would recommend the nicotine lozenges instead to avoid cough.

The smoke: It is the smoke that causes the lung cancer. The smoke causes an intense inflammatory reaction in the lungs, and when this continues for years and years, it can cause lung cancer. 

Now, the nicotine itself doesn't usually cause the cancer, but it is more addictive than heroin. Thus, you get hooked on the cigarettes, which have the smoke, which causes the cancer. A very, very sinister product.
