Good question: Creatinine in the urine, like in the blood, comes from the muscles.  The urine creatinine can be collected for 24 hours to calculate the creatinine clearance.  A sample of urine creatinine and protein can be used to estimate the 24h urine loss of protein.

Actual values: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, if both creatinine and BUN are normal you do not need to worry about the ratio.

Don't worry. : Although we use serum creatinine levels to estimate kidney function, a "normal" level will vary based on age, sex, muscle mass, and other variables.  Also, medications can affect the level without necessarily affecting kidney function per se. Confusing, i know. Based on your son's size which you shared, it is unlikely he has kidney disease, and his doctor could simply repeat the blood test.

CKD: Lower than normal GFR as computed by your creatinine using a formulae called MDRD.  The efficiency of your kidney is lower than normal and by definition is chronic kidney disease. You should see a kidney doc to determine the cause. A full history and physician followed by a urine test and other test may be needed. Best of luck.

Not necessarily. : Blood creatinine levels are used to measure kidney function. Some arthritic conditions could affect kidneys but not all conditions do.  If you have a question about your creatinine level or kidneys, your doctor can send a simple blood test. If you do have arthritis and kidney disease, please be careful of what pain medicines you take. Some can cause kidney injury.

One can have reduced GFR ie loss of kidney function and still make urine.So the blood test is important.

High creatinine: Serum c is dependent on the person's weight, race and age. You need to have a 24 hour urine collection for a creatinine (c) clearance determination to know what your renal function is. When the urine is returned, blood is taken for a c level. That is the sure way to know how serious your creatinine level is and what your true renal function is.

See below: An elevated BUN with normal creatinine and a ratio of  [generally more than 18-20] occurs most commonly in dehydrated individuals and is not a sign of kidney damage.It may also occur in in certain other conditions like  bleeding in the intestines, artificial nutrition intravenously of Amino Acids and use of steroids.

Not likely: Pregnancy in a healthy woman should not increase creatinine level. Please see your doctor for an evaluation of kidney function. There are far too many causes of elevated creatinine to list, but most point to impairment of kidney function.

Co-tango usually: The BUN is usually 10 times the creatinine. When the creatinine goes up, the BUN goes up similarly to roughly keep this proportion, in most kidney disease states.

The notable exception is when the creatinine goes up say by 20% to 1.2, but the BUN goes up *5 to 50.  This strongly suggests a pre-renal state, commonly dehydration. 

Mild elevations of BUN with normal creatinines aren't of concern.
