Erectile dysfunction or impotence refers to an inability to obtain and/or maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual relations, typically leading to some embarrassment by both partners (him b/c he's not manly enough, her b/c she didn't turn him on enough).

Many causes: There are many causes for erectile dysfunction, both physical and mental. Medication, diabetes, heart disease, tobacco and alcohol as well as anxiety and depression are common. Check w/a doctor.

No: Erectile dysfunction (ed) is not painful. It is simply the inability to obtain or maintain an erection sufficient enough for sexual intercourse. There is a condition called peyronie's which is scarring of the chambers of the penis which can lead to bending or curvature of the penis and this can be painful but it is a seperate condition from ed.

Many of our treatments address the symptom and not the cause.
As i tell my patients "the penis is the barameter of the health of the vascular system"
unfortunately many health care providers(hcp) do not make that connection.
You shoul consult a hcp that sepecializes in andrology.

Many boys expect themselves to be sexual athletes like the porn actors they see on the internet and think if their sexual responses are not as quick, intense or sustained that something is wrong.
