Constipation: If a baby's poops are very pasty like peanut butter then they are constipated. Their poops should be soft and mushy like oatmeal (or even softer). Straining for less than 5 minutes is normal. If the straining lasts more than that they might be constipated.

i go between pebble poops & regular poops every other week. is this chronic constipation even though i have normal poops in between? pebble poops normally dont hurt & are easy to pass. pebble poops started with an injury that limited mobility?

: I would not necessarily call it chronic constipation, but if you are not happy with the shape and size of your bowel movements, the best solution is to increase the amount of fiber in your diet and maintain good hydration. Plenty of fluids. Consider even adding in Metamucil once a day. Good luck.

Stool softener: May be due to subconscious resistance to defecating due to anticipated pain. Try Colace - stool softener; Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) increased water intake and physical activity, along with high fiber foods. Take care!

Yes: Whatever you're doing, keep doing it.  Constipation can cause a variety of deadly illnesses--especially colon cancer.  Bile acids break down into potent carcinogens, if transit time is more than 24 hours, bathing the colon and lower intestines with cancer-causing poison.  Keep your bowels moving regularly, and avoid colon cancer.

Constipated?: If it is your constipation which is causing back pain you may have to see a doctor and have stool manually removed.  Try some laxatives or a fleet's enema first.  The more important question is why is the constipation so severe.  Might be best to see somebody asap.
