Blood clots a risk: The major issue is the increased risk of blood clots. This is not a major risk but anyone with a past history of clots should not use oral contraceptives. Smokers should also avoid this med as smoking increases the risks of blood clots from oral contraceptives significantly.

ALL increase DVT ris: All birth control pills increase the risk of blood clots.  Pills containing drospirinone as they progestin component have a slightly higher risk of blood clot promotion (but are still avail on the market) than non-drospirinone formulations. There is some thought that the patch and vaginal ring may have slightly lower risk of this b/c they don't go through liver first, but that can't be said defini.

Small risk: Birth control pills carry a small increased risk of forming a blood clot. This risk is markedly increased in women over 35 who smoke, and these women should not take the pill. Discuss your personal medical history with your doctor to see if the pill is the right birth control option for you.

If an ongoing: risk for blood clots, preexisting and or active smoker can increase risk to level, that may be unsafe. Testing for possible a clotting disorder, is possible.

No oral hormonal: options are safe, and Mirena (levonorgestrel) (IUD) can only be used if your DVT/clot has cleared (after being confirmed with an ultrasound/Doppler) and you have no other underlying tendency in your blood to clot (i.e. Factor V leiden, Lupus anticoagulant, Protein C/S deficiency etc.).  In the meantime, only condoms and/or tubal ligation or male vasectomy are feasible.

BCPs: Oral contraceptives have a tendency to decrease the volume of bleeding on your period because the uterine lining is thinned by the pills. This is by design and can produce the type of dried look to the menstrual floe you are experiencing.

i am on birth control( yasmin for past 6 years)  and have had breakthrough bleeding on active pills. its 5th day of bleeding and passing big and several blood clots. should i go to er? what is the cause? i havent missed any pills.

Accepted Answer

Breakthru bleeding: Oral bcp therapy with low dose types requires punctual taking of the active pills: the active pills should be taken within the hour of the time the previous day's was taken.  Stop the active pills now, and wait five days, then begin another new pack of "Yaz".  If the bleeding continues, see your gyn provider for an exam and testing.

Hypercoagulopathy: This is a valid concern. Hopefully you are on anticoagulants for your blood clot. Okay to discuss this with your doc. A referral to a hematologist for more testing to see if you have one of the hypercoagulopathy conditions may benefit you.

A small risk: Birth control pills contain an estrogen, which is almost universally the same regardless of brand, and a progestagen which varies with the brand.  Different progetagens have different risks of causing blood clots, apparenly higher in the case of the progestagen in yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol).  The risks and absolute differences are very small.  Consider the difference between 1 in 10, 000 and 2 in 10, 000 for example.

Accepted Answer

See your OB-GYN: The progesterone content of your birth control pills may cause some swelling/ cramps and all birth control pills can cause blood clots in the leg veins. See your Primary Care Provider for a review of your susceptibility to vein problems and a review of your pill.
