Possible causes / risks for excessively long periods include but are not limited to: uterine fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis , endometrial cancer, type i diabetes mellitus, bleeding disorders (l.E., von  willebrand dz), clotting problems, infection, ovarian cyst, endometriosis ; hashimoto thyroiditis.

Yes: Being sick, under stress, changes in diet, or exercise can all affect the length and flow of menstrual cycle.  Keep a log of bleeding, if cycle continues to be prolonged after a few months, there may be another cause and an obgyn should evaluate it

If you are overweight or underweight this could affect your hormone levels and cause your periods to be irregular. If you are found to have pcos there are treatment options to help you ovulate.
