See a podiatrist: You might need x-rays to rule out injury to the bones or joints, and if the sprain or tear is significant enough you might need to limit activities, wear a brace/splint, take antiinflammatory medicine among other things.

Yes: Since a sprain is defined by a tear of the ligaments that connect the bones together, any ligaments can be sprained. The ligaments around the toes are easy to sprain, but they are also easy to heal in general. If there is profound swelling or no improvement with inability to put weight on the foot, then i would have it checked.

You may: Have a fracture. I doubt it is gout. You need to see a podiatrist.

Foot posture change: Your foot posture or positioning of your joints may have changed since your injury 2 yrs ago. You need to have a full biomechanical evaluation by a podiatrist. Your insoles may not be supportive enough.

Burning foot: While the best way to be sure is through an in-person examination it sounds like you have a nerve injury around the ankle. The nerve that controls sensation around the foot pass through the ankle and could have been injured when you sprain it.

Be patient: It sounds like you have a bad sprain and some associated numbness where you got the rug burn, and most likely had some superficial nerves damaged in the scrape. If the rug burn starts to get redder and spread, the warmth gets worse, it starts to drain pus, than it may be getting infected, so seek help again in that case. Ankle Sprain: An ankle sprain is really a misnomer in that there are typically ligaments torn (partially or fully) around the ankle.  The tearing from those ligaments may cause swelling (mild to severe) and the swelling may impinge on the surrounding skin nerves.  This may be causing the numbness, especially when standing because fluid naturally builds up lower with gravity.  Hope this helps, good luck!

Probably: Most likely a sprain; however, a "stress fracture" can be a source of pain and not show on an initial x-ray--take it easy, heat, hard soled shoe, antiinflamatory meds and if persists or gets worse over next 2weeks, see your physician and get new X-rays

Shoes!: Never walk around barefooted or with slippers.  You need arch support and likely inserts for your other shoes that are good for plantar fasciitis.
