i am 4 days past my expected period date. took a test yesterday morning and this morning. they both show a very very faint possative. but yet feel like my period is going to come and i have slight brown spotting. worried?

Positive pregnancy: It is common to get spotting in pregnancy. Most of the time everything is fine, but it is helpful to check with your doc to make sure. Occasionally, people may need a rhogam injection in this type of situation. You can also check blood work to be sure that the hormone level is rising appropriately. Spotting: If you have been on oral contraceptives then indeed you had PROTECTED intercourse. PROTECTED simply refers to pregnancy. You were of course unprotected from sexually transmitted diseases. The early spotting could mean your period is starting a little earlier than anticipated.

Happens sometimes: Many women have occasional variation of their mucus discharge, spotting between periods, a heavier period, a lighter period, or a late or missed period. Causes include: excessive weight loss or weight gain, increased exercising, emotional stress, medicines, having an illness, traveling, birth control pills, hormonal imbalances, etc… If persistent symptoms, one can check with her Ob-Gyn doctor.

May be normal period: You did not provide dates of sex and last menstrual period. It is possible that you are having your normal menstrual period. If you do not get your normal period, you may do a pregnancy test 4-5 days after the missed  period. Use first morning urine and follow the instructions for the test carefully.
If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time, every time. You may consider implanted contraceptive, or IUD. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Irregular bleeding is  one of the most common problems Obgyns treat.: If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections &  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  there are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

: At any age, particularly at "41" or thereabouts, increased stimulation of ovarian follicles by pituitary hormone production may result in two eggs being matured simultaneously, leading to increased estrogen production, and the sudden drop in estrogen which occurs just prior to ovulation will cause this type of withdrawal bleeding ("spotting"), similar to the mechanism in menstruation.
