what effects can losing a kidney have on the body-can it cause fatigue, or affect the immune system?

Accepted Answer

Single kidney: Loss of one kidney should have no effect on bodily functions. You can live a normal life with one kidney. The one exception would be of you had faling kidneys. In that situation every bit of healthy kidney tissue is needed to maintain kidney functions, so loss of an entire kidney could have a significant consequence. Fatigue and even immune dysfunction could occur with more severe kidney failure.

does organic stevia consumption of one to two servings daily cause any known health problems in the short term or long term? i do not know if stevia is bad for the liver, kidneys, or other organs and body systems?

: I do not recommend any so called health food/medicine products for they are unregulated.

Accepted Answer

Need clarification: If you're talking about pyelonephritis, an actual kidney infection, then antibiotic use is absolutely essential to management. If you're talking about a urinary tract infection like what most people get, then it depends. Asymptomatic women don't need to be treated but asymptomatic men should. Both symptomatic men and women should get treated.

Accepted Answer

Absolutely: People with kidney disease have a higher risk of hormonal and reproductive problems. Incidence of erectile dysfunction is higher. Pregnancy rates in women with advanced kidney disease are much lower, and the chances of getting pregnant are directly proportional to the severity of the kidney disease.

Probably not a: Major issue if the anatomic variant doesn't allow retrograde (backward) flow of urine which is a set up for recurrent kidney infections.

Maybe not: There are thousands of supplements advertised to do all sorts of magical remedies. Very few supplements have real research studies to show benefits (but manufacturers make claims based on theories, animal tests, testimonials, chemical similarities, etc... instead of based on real research because real research is hard to do and is expensive to do).

i have pain in my right lower back after walking for about 15 minutes. oct. 2010 i had an incident where i bled out and all my systems shut down.  could this be kidney related?

This : This does need to be evaluated based on your past medical history. It could be musculoskeletal pain. Try to note if the pain radiates down your leg when you get it. Because of your history of kidney problems, you should be tested for infection or blood in your urine. Please see your doctor, share your past medical history, and schedule a complete evaluation.

: If the findings and creatinine have not changed in 14 years then it is not cause for concern- just followup

in 2009 i had "prominence of the right renal collecting system, possibly rep mild hydronephrosis in a duplicated system." they did not tell me to pursue more testing. now, i had ab us mild/mod hydro in same kidney. is this a structural prob?

: Yes, that is a structural and congenital abnormality, i.e. you are born with it. This condition at this degree does not impair your right kidney function. Take care.
