Mitral stenosis: Severe mitral stenosis is a mechanical obstructive lesion. It needs to be corrected by surgery or occassionally a catheter based dilation of the abnormal valve. Surgery is generally preferred. Non invasive treatment can not increase the valve area and is limited to slowing the heart rate to allow more time for ventricular filling. This is of limited benefit.

Possibly: Mitral stenosis, depending on the epidemiology of where acquired, is a slowly, but naturally, progressive process that may require some intervention if symptoms or cardiac function are adversely affected.  Beta-blockers may be useful to control associated arrhythmia, & antibiotics to avoid development of a valvular infection (endocarditis).  Close monitoring by exam & echocardiography is required.

Mitral valve: The mitral valve has to open properly to let blood flow into the left ventricle from the atrium. If it doesn't, we call this stenosis. It has to close to keep the blood flowing toward the body, if it doesn't we call this regurgitation or insufficiency. Either or both problems can exist with the valve if its abnormal. Insufficiency is more common.

Heart cath would reveal the hemodynamics and the need for surgical intervention.

Often: Diuretics, which increase urine formation, can reduce blood pressure in the lungs by reducing the volume of circulating blood. Beta-blockers, digoxin , and calcium channel blockers help control heart rhythms. Anticoagulants may be needed to prevent clot formation in people with atrial fibrillation. If drug therapy does not reduce the symptoms satisfactorily, the valve may be repaired or replace.

Depends: Mitral stenosis(ms) can cause a variety of symptoms depending on severity. Severe MS can cause left atrial enlargement leading to afib and since the mv is the "door "to the left ventricle there is decrease in cardiac out put.Pressure builds up behind it and back in to the lungs and can cause congestive heart failure.Ms pts can get their valve replaced and reverse many of these if done early enough.
