Alopecia vs fungus: Child probably is developing alopecia. It would be important also to rule out a fungal infection of the scalp. Best would be to see a dermatologist who can do a Woods light examination and a KOH prep and tell you the diagnosis and treatment right away. If it is Alopecia he will also be able to guide you properly and reassure you. If required further work up can also be initiated.

Multiple symptoms: Since many of these symptoms, such as crusting on knuckles, coarse dry hair and hair loss are dermatologic symptoms, it would be great to see a dermatologist to have the whole picture evaluated.  Other conditions besides thyroid disease can give such a combination of symptoms.  What is needed is a thorough investigation.

Hair Loss: Some prescriptions may have thinning hair as one of their side effects. These include amphetamines, lithium, anti-depressants, some diet pills and chemotherapy drugs. Other causes included: genetics, sickness, hormones, thyroid disease, lupus, crash diets and others. Conditioners do not cause hair loss.
