That depends: There are 2 forms of medicine. One that will make the prostate somewhat smaller and another that affects the "tone" of the prostate to allow better flow. There are combination meds as well. Ask your doctor which you are on or should take.

See urologist: Enlargement of the prostate gland comes with age, and if you have not had a rectal exam within the past year by a qualified physician, then you need that first .  Enlargement may be benign or malignant, and decision on treatment modality depends upon examination.  Best to see a urologist.

BPH: Neither one of these medications decrease the size of the prostate. A medication like proscar(finasteride) does.

Exam: see your physician or a urologist for an assessment.  Alpha blocker drugs are commonly prescribed as first line therapy for symptomatic BPH.

Enlarged prostate: Ep is a normal part of aging.  It is only problematic if it causes urinary symptoms that are bothersome to you.  If you are at increased risk of prostate cancer (i.e. You have a family history of it, are of african descent, or your psa has been high previously), it should be checked annually.  If you are not at increased risk, it should be checked every two years, if you decide you want screening.

R/O Prostate Ca: The main concern in this situation is making sure there is no worry about the possibilty of prostate cancer.  If the psa is normal and the prostate exam is normal I have no concerns about offering testosterone replacement, though I do have a lower threshold in reccommending prostate biospy.

Slow urination: An enlarged prostate is possible, as is a prostate infection.  Please see your doctor for diagnosis.  You may be referred to a urologist.  Ask about natural products to help prostate as an alternative to medication, although conventional medicine is not always knowledgeable about these things.  Peace and good health.

Usually not: If it is ordinary enlargement, then the erectile potential is usually normal.  Rarely the nervous/vascular supply can be affected and dysfunction may occur.  This is more common in diabetics.  The principal effect of an enlarged prostate is urinary frequency and urgency and a lessened ability to completely empty the bladder on urination.

Bph: Prostate enlargement is common in older men. Urinary problems are associated. There is no cure.
