Perhaps: The fact that you are taking old vicodin tells me you may be taking it for another problem that you have not seen you pcp about. Best to check with your doctor if you are having difficulties. The expire date does not necessarily mean the drug is unsafe, but it may lose potency.

Yes for mild pain: Lower dose of telenol is good for mild pain. For moderate or severe pain you may need a short courrse vicodein initially. Once pain is controlled vicoden can be gradually switched to actamenophen as needed

i slipped on my stairs and hit my forearm on the step.  it immediately went to swelling.  it feels like a knot in the center. it has swollen a good bit and it burns.  medium to dark bruise.  i have it on ice and taking pain pills (vicodin 5/500) i already

Periosteal hematoma: This is the fancy name for a bruise of the bone itself, where blood accumulates between the bone and the tissue which lines the outside (the periosteum).  Ice for 48 hours, followed by heat may help it resolve, and Ibuprofen after 24 hours will probably be more useful than hydrocodone (200-400 mg three to four times a day with food or milk).  If it persists longer, you may have a hairline fracture.

It depends: The amount of pain medication varies with the intensity of pain, weight of the patient, and strength of the medicine to name just a few factors.  As the pain eases, the need for pain medication will too.  Usually, one does not need to take a strong pain medication for more than a few days.

Generally no: But unfortunately common.  Firstly, this would be 4.5 grams of tylenol (acetaminophen) per day, which is higher than the 4 grams/day previously considered safe, and much higher than the 2 grams/day now considered safe.  If the vicodin was the only thing done for the pain, it is clearly not a good choice.  In many people, tolerance leads to gradually increasing dose and decreased safety, as well as diversion/od.

Ask your doc!: I understand that not all doctors &amp; surgeons are created equal. But if you don't trust your doctor/surgeon, it's best to find another one if at all possible. Case in point is asking if medications (or procedures) that are prescribed (or recommended) are safe. Ask that doc! Tell him/her everything about you. It's not time to hide anything. That way, we can be sure that meds etc are safe for you.

Yes: Oxycodone or Oxymorphone are stronger but also riskier and more addictive.  Opana is the trade name of one such med, Dilaudid is another.

You can: However, you might diminish hydrophone analgesic effect.  The half-life elimination: 3.8-6 hours. Your doctor made the benefit-risk decision and prescribed your medicine accordingly.  He/she chose the best method for dealing with your particular situation.

1-2 pills per day: Any short acting medication really should not be used long term. Secondly 1-2 pills per day does not constitute addiction. You probably have a dependency problem. Getting off the med should be easy, if you have problems please see your doctor.
