recently had  problems getting erection. dr gave me a few viagra (sildenafil). afraid to take because of risk of priapism. thoughts?

PRIAPISM: It is a potential side effect but I have only seen it with patients with pooly controlled sickle cell anemia or elicit drug use. It is safe and effective. If this is not reassuring enough use a small dose first(25 mg) as a trial. The trials before it was fda approved used several times the eventual recomended dose to determine safety.

Possibly: Viagra (sildenafil) and any agent used treat erectile dysfunction can induce priapism. If viagra (sildenafil) is taken at night, then it is possible that a normal erection could last longer and cause priapism. Who actually develops priapism depends on their risk factors such as age, comorbidities including diabetes and hypertension, and use of other medications. The more comorbidities a man has, the less likely.

Yes: Any dose of Viagra (sildenafil) can cause priapism - a prolonged and unresolving erection.

Priapism is a serious problem and if experiencing erection lasting longer than 4 hours medical treatment should be sought urgently to avoid long term damage or complications.

Priapism and Viagra (sildenafil): No, rarely.  Young men that i treat sometimes use viagra (sildenafil) for longer sexual play and for more vigorous sexual activity.  Some men use these medications to maintain erections when they use condoms. Thus, preventing pregnancy and other exposure to some sexually transmitted infections.

Get a health care provider that is versed in this area... There are plenty to be found.

Not recommended: Taking meds for recreation purposes only has risks and at age 25 you should not need this med.

Drugs and vessels: Trazadone, arterial venous fistula (usually trauma), sickle cell disease to name a few are associated with priapism. Before viagra (sildenafil) there where and still are other medications for erectile dysfunction. These medications also are also associated with priapism. Priapism is an erection for longer than 4-6 hours  lenghty priapism can be associated with permanent erectile dysfunction (ed).

Should diminish...: This condition is usually self-limiting and should begin to go away as the blood level of your Viagra (sildenafil) dose diminishes in your system.  As they say on the TV ads... if it lasts longer than 4 hours, consult a physician.

have a trial of 25mg sildenafil, scared of priapism. usually no trouble with ed solo but have never been able to properly have sex due to ed since i was 16.. is the risk even worth trying the pill? slightly overweight (57 180) but otherwise healthy?

Maybe: Check with your doctor.  If you have low testosterone, testosterone replacement tx rather than viagra (sildenafil) may be helpful.
