Maybe a viral : Infection (or possibly bacterial). For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician ; get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle waloe vera juice twice a day.

Sore  throat,: May be strep or viral infection, or allergies but in the age of corona could be corona as well. Could try antihistamine for allergies but f/u/ /w provider as for strep you need testing (less likely with nasal congestion to be strep) . Also due to the pandemic it is important to find those with mild corona virus to avoid transmission

Dr. can check throat: Throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), allergies or irritants, sinusitis, etc... Usually, one sees the doctor if the throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat and review details to see if influenza, laryngitis, bronchitis, etc., are present).

Pharyngitis pain: Group A negative Strep screen and  symtoms getting worse after 5 to 7 days of symtomatic treatment you should be evaluated again for previously unsuspected diagnosis ( e.g infectious mononucleosis, primary HIV, supperative complication such as peritonsillar abscess etc...) Other treatments can help: topical/local lozenges, throat spray, Chinese herbals, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Glucocorticoids etc...
