Vaginal odor: Some vaginal infections have very unpleasant odors. Go to your gyn provider for an exam and a vaginal culture.  Sometimes a tampon can be "lost" inside the vagina and the tampon can harbor bacteria.  This kind of source for an infection can be causing the problem.

why does my girlfriend's and my own vagina smell like sewage even though we have bathed?

Bacterial overgrowth: Sewage is a new one for me. Usually dead fish, asset the risk of being politically incorrect. The odor is produced by amines emitted by the anaerobic (non oxygen consuming) bacteria that tend to overgrow when the vaginal environment ph is high or basic.  The replace the"good" bacteria, lactobacillus. This happens with sex and around a woman's period. Treatment is easy but recurrence is common.

Vaginal discharge: You need to make sure and go to the doctor, You could have a sexually transmitted disease or bacterial infection or a yeast infection or all three.  If infection is left untreated can lead to infertility problems in the future.

The main symptom is odor, often "fishy" (resulting from the same chemicals produced when fish decay), especially after sex. It can be treated. Have a sensitive and caring discussion with her, including advice to see her gynecologist. (The advice might include no vaginal sex or strictly condom use for a while.) Good luck.
