It : It is actually the other way around. A meniscal tear causes the baker's cyst. The collagen fibers of the meniscus are arranged in a parallel arrangement and a tear creates a communication with the capsule and serves as a one way valve to create the cyst.

Not too long: Three month wait is not too long and it should result in any extra or permanent damage.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Meniscus tear: Meniscus tear really depends on what symptoms you have. If you are able to walk with minimal pain and go up and down stairs then I would leave it alone. PT may be helpful. To be definitive an MRI is needed. See below: A meniscus is a structure that is made of cartilage and serves as a cushion between two bones.  The knee has two: one medial and one lateral.  Sometimes they can tear through degeneration or injury.  The term residual means that there is “still” a tear; suggesting a persistent tear.  This term can be used if someone has had prior surgery, or even if they have had a previous mri to compare to.

Yes, it can, BUT it-: Is rather unlikely, as they generally don't, unless the tear is a minor one. I don't think they heal but they certainly become symptom-free.
Surgery can help certain types of the tears by repairing them which are dependent on the specific site they occur in. Most are however not amenable to repair.

Joint line pain: The most common physical finding is pain along the joint line.  Clicking and locking are also common symptoms for unstable tears.  Many patients will have some knee swelling and it may not always be easy to point to a specific site.  A good doctors physical exam should be 90% accurate and if there is any question than an MRI is a great way to prove it.
