Humidity: A humidifier will help, as will using saline drops right in the nose to loosen the mucous. If someone is taking a shower, someone else sitting in bathroom in the steam from the shower is also helpful. Put the humidifier right next to the baby's crib. Putting it across the room doesn't do much good.

Saline nose drops: Saline (salt water) nose drops may relieve the symptoms  of congestion. Also a vaporizer.There is currently no other safe otc medications for relief of symptoms at this age.

What other sx ?: Fever @ a 100.8 level is common in infants with a wide variety of minor and some significant illnesses. I find tylenol (acetaminophen) can give comfort ; take a degree off a temp, but any resolution will be the illness going thru its cycles.If baby is playing some ; taking fluids well enough to wet every 6hrs, u may be able to ride this out at home. If quiet, taking poorly etc. Call in ; or see the dr.

URI: It sounds like a cold- use humidifier, elevate the head of the crib or bassinet, and use saline nose drops and suction, especially before feeding.

Fluids/monitor: This is something you can probably monitor at home. If baby has playful times/fluid intake enough to wet diapers every 6hr/breathing not too noticable suggests home care is ok. Lack of play/noticable incresed work to breathe/poor fluid intake all suggest a dr visit in order.Nasal saline helps keep the nose clear & tylenol (acetaminophen) as a comfort med may help.

Illness in infant: Nasal congestion and coughing in an infant is usually associated with an upper respiratory infection.  Although most are viral and cannot be cured, bacterial forms in this age group can be very dangerous.  Nasal saline drops to the nose can help with congestion (too young for any medication) while you are preparing for your doctor visit.

Stuffy nose: Hold a wisp of cotton or tissue in front of nostrils to make sure that some air is coming through.  Rarely the  nasal passage is completely blocked at birth.  Most babies respond to saline nasal spray and suction with bulb.  If you put a litle vaseline on tip then the builb goes in easy and seals well for good suction.  If congestion persists, then tell doctor.

Variable: Nasal congestion can be caused by  allergic rhinitis, deviated septum, nasal polyps, common cold and combination of the above. Treatment include steroid or antihistamine nasal spray, decongestant/ antihistamine pills, surgery. See an ENT doctor if problem is persistent!

Triad: The triad of nasal saline irrigation, nasal steroid spray and antihistamine often results in dramatic improvement of nasal obstruction and drainage.  Adding a temporary decongestant is also effective.  Persistent symptoms may indicate structural issues, refractory allergy or infection.  See an otolaryngologist for evaluation with persistent symptoms.
