Not much you can do: With nasal steroids you can reduce the size, with decongestant you can reduce the swelling and with the allergy treatment you can prevent the recurrences. See below:: In cases of anosmia caused by sinus infections, antibiotics can clear up the sinus infection, thus curing the anosmia. It may require many months of antibiotic treatment for the sense of smell to return. Other options: polyps removed; zinc and lutein supplements; adjustments done by a chiropractor (top of neck, behind ears).

Depends: Depends on the cause.  There are very many causes for loss of smell.  Needs to be checked out. Some say that taking zinc tablets may help if zinc deficiency is the cause.

See his doctor.: Suspect he has chronic lung disease and the anosmia is not unusual in a smoker. The vertigo needs to be evaluated . He needs close evaluation and very soon. He most likely is getting the chest infection from his chronic lung disease.

Depend on cause: Anosmia may simply be due to the nasal tissue swelling that occurs with a cold, sinus infection, or allergies.  If that is the case, appropriate medication to treat the cause will often improve the sense of smell.  Other causes may be less amenable to treatment.  See you doctor for evaluation for possible causes of anosmia.

Unknown: First, the cause of anosmia (inability to smell) must be determined.  If air is not getting into the nose, that can be surgically corrected but if the nerves involved in the sense of smell have been damaged by a viral infection or a skull fracture, only tincture of time will help. Some people think zinc supplements can help but the evidence has not always shown that is true.
