hi, i have a croaky voice, almost gone but no sore throat.  have a cold, tight chest and the odd headache also? any ideas what it could be please?

Viral URI: Your symptoms sound like a viral upper respiratory infection.  One of the common symptoms is a hoarse voice or loss of voice, called laryngitis.  If you do not improve in about 10-14 days see your doctor.

Hypnogogic panic: Hypnagogic (ie falling asleep) panic attacks occur, often part of a myriad of symptoms in this transitional state between wakefulness and sleep (hypnagogic hallucinations being the most frequent).  There are medications as well as cognitive behavioral treatments as treatment; for some patients, just having knowledge of these are sufficient as therapy.  See your doctor if bothersome.

Allergy: This sounds miserable!   If it came on abruptly within minutes I worry about an allergic reaction.  Take an antihistamine right away and/or go to ER if it's progressing.  Otherwise  it could be a allergies.  Itching all over is not usually part of a cold.

Maybe (not) . . .: It sounds like you might be describing bronchospasm or reactive airway disease, similar to an asthma attack. Of course, it could also be acute bronchitis or even pneumonia, especially if you have a productive cough + fevers, sweats & chills. Based just upon that tightness in your chest, best to go see your doc for evaluation, diagnosis & treatment. Antibiotics will not be necessary if just a virus.

Doctor...: Without knowing anything about you makes answering your post extremely difficult; however i always err on the side of caution so if you are having any difficulty breathing call your doctor right away; or have someone take you to the nearest emergency room.  If you are alone then call 9-11 as soon as possible!
