Too vague: Wish i could give a useful answer, but your question is too vague to permit a specific answer.  Those with autism sometimes do have physical problems from toe walking through GI problems.  Generally, the problems are treated the same way they would be if the child did not have autism--but sometimes the autism complicates the treatment.

Any exercise: For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

Depends: Both can help with back pain.  The chiropractor tends to provides treatments to the patient to improve their pain, allowing for a passive patient role.  Whereas the physical therapist tends to provide treatments  (exercises) for the patient to engage in, allowing for a more active patient role.  Both approaches can be effective.

why is my surgeon telling me i don't need physical therapy?

Depends: 1) Some conditions do not seem to respond well to PT.

2) There may not be decent PT resources available.

3) The goal of PT is to teach you how to do exercises at home/in the community on your own and perhaps additional PT is not needed by you.

my 2 yr son has lissencephaly. are there any new additional therapies other than physical and occupational services that can help him develop?

Smooth gyra/dvlpment: How severe is his lissencephaly? Any difficulty swallowing/coordinating breathing? Any seizures? If his brain is not severely affected and he is making developmental progress with PT/OT/Speech I would intensify his services so that he is getting therapy of some sort every waking moment. Realistically what this means is that ALL caretakers work with him in ways that reinforce existing therapy.

Beware: 1) getting pushed and progressed too aggressively
2) getting passive modalities (hooked up to machines) and abandoned while the therapist pays attention to other clients.

Depends!: It depends on what your doctor ordered. I generally prescribe an exercise program to stretch and strengthen the back (the therapist instructs you in this), plus general fitness (aerobic exercise). The therapist may use other techniques, but in the end you should be able to do the exercise program on your own.

Too many to: Answer here. There are many different types, schools and thoughts when it comes to physical therapy. In a broader sense, in a rehab setting, you will see a physical therapist, occupational therapist and sometimes a speech therapist (who do much more than speech). There are also recreational, vocational and psychotherapists. Hope this helps.

is there physical therapy for pedal oedema?

Accepted Answer

Yes: There are physical therapists and occupational therapists that specialize in edema control.  They usually treat lymphedema that can be seen following a mastectomy.  They would be able to use their approaches to assist with edema management of the feet.  Also  elevation of the ankles above the level of the heart, ankle pump exercises and support stockings are also very effective.
