Yes its common: It's common to have mastalgia (or painful breasts) if you are taking birth control pills. It often does go away after your body gets used to the hormone changes. If the pain gets severe then go back to your physician and see what other form of birth control might work.

Costochondritis: This sounds like costochondritis, a form of rheumatism that is very common in young women especially. NSAIDs like ibuprofen (400-600 mg with food every 4 to 6  hours) or Aleve (naproxen) (1-2 tablets with food twice a day) usually helps.

Sore muscles: Breast pain can come from multiple sources. Sometimes this pain may be related to the end of menstrual cycles. If you are doing exercises that stress the muscles of the chest, namely the pectoralis muscles, you may feel pain across the chest that extends into the armpits. With fluid hydration, rest and anti-inflammatory medications, you may be able to find relief from your aches.

Maybe you need to: check for pregnancy.  If first test negative, then check again in 1 week.  It is always good to assume that you may be pregnant, since breast tenderness is one of the first signs of pregnancy.  If both tests are negative, and you have a period, then you know you are not pregnant.  Breast tenderness can also come from hormonal imbalance and overstimulation, or infection if it is just one breast.

Costalchondritis: Pain to touch implicate the ribs where they join the breastbone.  Inflammation at that site can explain your pain.  Tzietz's syndrome.
