Sugar Rush: Not by itself but is converted to glucose in the body, causing a sugar rush. When added to caffeine the "energy" rush is quickly burned and then you "crash" as in all these energy drinks you see.  The harm comes in the way your body "deals" with sugar and long term effects of Insulin over production and consumption. Psychological addiction is another harmful side effect. Not clear.: It may depend on the severity of the ckd.  A small study in 2002 [nephrol. Dial. Transplant. (2002) 17 (3): 528-529] looked at taurine supplementation in dialysis patients and found increased side effects (mostly dizziness and vertigo) that resolved with discontinuation of the taurine. Recommend using caution with any non-fda approved pharmaceuticals, particularly in ckd.  Not enough is known.

Amino acid: Taurine is a non-essential amino acid.  Your body makes whatever is needed.  Cats, for instance, lack this production and taurine deficiency can occur in felines.  There is not enough in red bull, etc. To cause any known problems.

MEAT: Taurine's a great nutrient for bodybuilding and maintenance, and it can be found in a variety of foods.  
I find it also is helpful to clear the mind and energize and even to treat migraine headaches.

Most likely: That is an unusual response. Taurine is calming to most, in fact it is included in many natural sleep aids. If you take it in the afternoon any stimulating effect will likely dissipate by bedtime, but the only way you will know for sure is to try it. To be extra safe try it in the early afternoon.

Because expected?: Virtually all "energy drinks" have taurine but i know of no good evidence that taurine increases energy.Taurine is an Amino Acid that is important for heart health & muscles & acts as a inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it actually has a calming effect on the nervous system, the opposite of what you might want in an energy drink.But because it is widely used in these drinks people now expect it!

Probably none: Guarana is a brazilian plant that is rich in caffeine and marketed for this. You want to be sure you know who's producing it. "holistic" medicines are often not what's on the label, and the weird politics allows this; quack "herbal medicines" are in some areas the leading cause of liver necrosis.

News to me: This is generally recognized as being as safe as coffee. Politics drives what is banned and not banned in the usa; totally safe stuff like saccharin are illegal, while obviously dangerous plant products comfrey and graviola remain in the shelves. If a celebrity dies while taking a supplement (as happened with guarana) there's usually a foolish media circus.
