Tattoo Numb Cream: Hello. If no contraindication, topical lidocaine gel would be useful for your pain relief. Works on numbness, pins and needle, burning, stabbing, etc. type pain. It comes in a generic patch form 5%. Some pharmacies can concoct it as strong as 10% solution. You'll need prescriptions for these medications. Gel is cheaper than generic lidocaine 12 hours on 12 off patches.

Itchy ink: Itching after a new tattoo is most likely due to the healing process and can be minimized by use of a thick moisturizer in ointment form, such as Aquaphor or equivalent.  Itching associated with pain and redness is suggestive of an allergic reaction or an infection, and warrants an evaluation by a healthcare practitioner.

I'd urge you not to: Most areas, especially those far away from bone, will not be that uncomfortable. There's are a variety of topical creams with Lidocaine or other 'caine products, ask your artist whether these are right. Acetaminophen is a good choice for an oral analgesic as it doesn't interfere with platelet function. You may find the sensations, even if not pleasant, make this meaningful experience even richer.
