what causes a lisp?

Lisp: The cause of a lisp can vary. In some instances, the cause is physiological, and the patient has some sort of deformity or medical condition which causes a lisp. For example, a child with swollen adenoids may tend to lisp, as will people who have recurring stuffy noses. Also, a lisp can be formed when the tongue is bruised or swollen. People with underbites, overbites and/or large tongues.

Therapy that targets production of  the sounds  "s" &amp; "z" at the beginning, middle &amp; end of words differs depending on whether the lisp is frontal/interdental, lateral or palatal. A "whistling" lisp may be caused by dentures or dental appliances. See your dentist first for evaluation &amp; appropriate referrals.

Evaluations by a primary care physician &amp; a dentist determine if both speech/language &amp; psychotherapy are needed.

Lisp: Most often lisps are from improper tongue placement when a person speaks. Most of the time this can be corrected with speech therapy. Occasionally there are anatomical (parts of the mouth) that interfere or hardware (like lisp with braces or tongue piercing) in which case remove the hardware-voila! lisp can occur when someone has poor muscle tone, this is harder to correct with speech therapy.

Not without doing a : History, physical exam and neurological exam. A lateral lisp or palatal could be caused by bell's (facial nerve) palsy , maybe. Your doctor may refer you to a neurologist to rule out any problem with broca's motor speech area of the brain.

Lisp: the sudden development of a lisp deserves an evaluation of the teeth, tongue, and oral cavity. So a dental exam is in order. Sometimes the thin attachment of the tongue to the floor of the mouth will become snagged between the lower front teeth when the tongue is in function, especially protruded. This functional problem is usually present since birth but can develop with shifting teeth.

It will depend: Air that escapes in the form of a lisp may be corrected by braces if the front teeth can be brought together by the orthodontics.  However, it may not correct the lisp is the functional bite position is such that the front teeth are not close enough for approximation.  Check with you doctor to determine your best functional bite position and then determine how close the front teeth come.
