Yes it's true: I think this is your third question. People are immune (or at least highly resistant) to new infections with the HSV type they already have, anywhere on the body. Symptoms are identical for HSV1 or HSV2, typically with blisters that become painful sores, first infection often with swollen lymph nodes nearby, sometimes fever. Genital HSV1 usually causes far fewer recurrent outbreaks than HSV2.

Very common: You have it for life. You can transmit it even if you have no symptoms. 60% of people under age 60 have it. L Lysine supplement taken daily may reduce the outbreaks. If it keeps flaring up and it bothers you, you can take an anti viral medication but there is a risk of drug resistance over long periods of time. Some people take acyclovir only when they are starting to having symptoms

When exposed you may or may not develop symptoms, but you will form antibodies (blood proteins directed against the virus) which are measured in the test.  If you are positive you have had this and still have it.  The test cannot reliably distinguish between the two types.

HSV test?: If meaning an HSV test (not a tear), there are different kinds of tests, and all tests can have false negative or false positive results. Also, HSV symptoms can overlap with symptoms of other medical conditions. That means having HSV symptoms doesn't always mean having an HSV infection. Likewise, having an HSV infection doesn't always create HSV symptoms. That's why a doctor's expertise is needed.

Herpes: 75% of the humans around you have hsv1. 90% of those have no outbreaks. But, the bad news is that all are still contagious through viral shedding. Having sores, we now know, are in no way predictive of contagiousness. There is no test to predict when anyone is shedding this virus. It is much more likely that your friend already has hsv1.

Yes: So traditionally HSV was responsible for oral lesion and HSV 2 genital lesions. They are commonly in both areas now. You can have virus present anywhere in the body without having a visible lesions, or the lesion may be visible but very hard to see. You can do blood to see if you have been exposed in the past, but there is not really a test to see if a lesion is there but hard to see
