Soon: Within 1-2 days of initial exposure to herpes symptoms will begin to appear, usually around or in the mouth. Tiny vesicles will form on and/or around the lips and sometimes in the mouth on the gums or hard palate. These vesicles eventually pop and sores/ulcerations form in their place. Fever can also occur with this and the condition is painful. It is a good idea shield infants from hsv+ people.

: During herpes outbreaks, the lesions may itch. But herpes does not cause itching as the only symptom and is not the explanation for what you are feeling. Also, herpes symptoms always are intermittent and never last more than 10-14 days, and outbreaks occur no more often than once a month. HSV never causes continuous symptoms. Beware of HSV blood tests:  they often are very unreliable.

Multiple clusters of: Very serious but treatable. Multiple clusters of small blisters and scabs. Very sick. Occurs if mother gets the virus for first time only a week or less before birth. Before mother's immunity has a chance to develop. If mother's infection is older, her immunity will also protect the newborn through passive immunity.

Testing: If no lesions are present, the only way to know if the partner has hsv would be to do a blood test hsv 1 and 2 antibodies. If those are positive it indicates prior infection, of which hsv 2 is known to be chronic.

Herpes Infection: 100% likely.  This is a contagious virus. The only thing we know besides the fact that you will be contagious at times is that we still have no way to predict when you are contagious.
