i have a uti and am experiencing flu-like symptoms such as mild fever, swollen lymph nodes, and pressure in ears. i'm extremely concerned. flu, symptoms of uti, or something much worse?

Concurrent virus: A simple UTI will not cause fever though if it's a kidney infection rather than bladder infection you'll have a fever. But a UTI will never cause swollen lymph nodes (in your neck) or pressure in ears, so you seem to have a viral infection at the same time as your UTI. There is no law that says you can't have a UTI and viral infection at the same time. This is probably not flu but a milder virus.

Yes!: Anything that has been an ongoing problem for months needs to be checked.  If there was a simple explanation, you would have found it.  Since the symptoms were not temporary, it is important to find out what is going on.  So do get checked.  Good luck!

Abs: Well you have something going on. You are best to see your doctor for exam and perhaps lab tests. Not unusual for lymph nodes to be inflamed but all of your symptoms calm for an exam

Dr. can check throat: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can temporarily lessen pain.

Parotid nodes: The major sites of node involvement in the H&amp;N area are related to the jugular nodes.  If not of primary lymphomatous origin the nodes are metastatic usually from thyroid  or oral squamous lesions metastatic to neck. In the area between ear and jaw the parotid is a major structure with multiple nodes  either metastatic from cutaneous regions or from a primary parotid lesion. Bx may be needed.

Find the cause!: The most important thing is to figure out WHY you have enlarged lymph nodes...is there an infection somewhere?  A dental problem?  Something more serious?  If it's been just a week or two and they're not enlarging with time, you're probably ok to watch them for a while.  But if they persist beyond a month, grow, or are hard or fixed, you should be seen sooner than later to discuss next steps.

Infections: The lymph nodes behind the ears and on the back of the neck are part of the huge system of infection-fighting 'lymph'. Each group of nodes (lumps) relates to specific areas of the body, so swelling behind the ears could be related to ear infection, scalp infection or irritation, and upper respiratory infections. Even after the infection is cleared, the lumps can remain for days to weeks.

Likely benign, but: The neck is a very common place for mild lymph node enlargements. We do about 5-6 lymph node biopsies a day-from the neck-and most of them are benign. However if rapid growth is noted, or if bigger than 3cm, or if other symptoms develop you need to have it checked. The most common cause of enlarged lymph nodes in the neck are a viral illness, a dental infection, skin infection and "other".
