: I would expect cerebral edema in this unfortunate scenario. I also expect the edema would involve the cerebral cortex as well as the brain stem. Needless to say recovery of more brain function is very unlikely the longer the coma lasts.

Accepted Answer

Good chance: Depending on the severity of the meningitis, I have found that most of my patients do very well, and have a full, or near full recovery.  Occasionally, there are cases that leave behind scars that can lead to seizures, or brain injury.  However, this is best answered by the neurologist or neurosurgeon that was involved with the specific case, since there can be many factors relating to outcome.

Encephalitis: Brain swelling or edema is a situation in which inflammation, from infection causes brain tissue to swell.  It is possible for the swelling to resolve but the course to normal can be very long due to the effect of the infection.
Brain paosy refers to weakness or paralysis of the muscles due to an abnormality of brain function.  Either can be fatal and either can resolve.

Japanese encephaliti: This very severe disease has a better than 30% mortality rate and a 30% incidence of neurological dysfunction after recovery. Severity of both depend upon the particular organism causing the brain inflammation.

i have non ep seizures. i get severe swelling in spine with epileptic brain swelling. pain to kidneys sometimes angina. how do i test for lupus or hashimoros encephalitis? i have already went blind in rt eye. get very violent headaches?

The brain stem also houses the nerves that innervate the structures of the head, including facial muscles.

Bad event: Brain stem hemorrhage is not great, as relatively small area with critical nerves and connections.  Hard to control once started, and often pts left with chronic disability.  I know this is not good news, but hopefully careful inpatient medical care will lead to survival and rehabilitation measures to restoration.

Many reasons: Fluid in the brain can be normal or abnormal. There is spinal fluid all the time around the brainstem, but accumulation of fluid such as hydrocephalus and pseudotumor cerebri can cause problems.  There are of course infection, tumors and other conditions that lead to fluid in the brain.  You need to be under the care of a neurologist and get all your questions answered.

Bad news: Means something is pushing on the brainstem.  Because it controls breathing and other basic body functions, brainstem compression is very bad news, especially if it is rapid.
