i have chronic constipation problems for over 15 years. i've tried everything and nothing helped except strong laxatives. is there any advice?

Nothing : Will be effective if you don't use it regularly as directed. At times you may have to double up for a few days then go back on maintenance. You may need to discuss this with your physician. Lab tests may be ordered to rule our other medical conditions that can cause longstanding constipation. Cancer is one of them .Thyroid problem is another. Drink plenty of water , fibers, fruits, veges etc.

None, really. : It wouldn't really be advisable to take ANY laxative every day, all the time. The cause of your constipation should be investigated and elucidated. If idiopathic, there are treatment options besides laxatives. Even simple optimization of fiber and water intake may help.

very good evening and happy july 4th weekend doctors. for occasional constipation can you alternate between miralax and another laxative like dulcolax or is dulcolax too strong to use on an intermittent basis?

: These laxatives work by different mechanisms and can be alternated. Dulcolax is a bowel stimulant and I think is too strong for frequent use. However, if you're experiencing a change in bowel habits instead of very occasional uncomfortable constipation, it calls for an investigation including colonoscopy. Hydration & Exercise: There are many reasons for relative constipation. Have your md review your current medications for constipation as side effect. Fiber (with enough water) very helpful, and you need to titrate up to full doses or you will get gassy. A healthy, fiber filled diet always good, and don't forget to drink more water. Regular exercise also excellent for getting those bowels moving.

: You don't mention what medication you're taking. Has that degree of nausea been evaluated and explained by a gastroenterologist? If you're currently having urges for a BM but can't go, you'll have to work from below by inserting a dulcolax rectal suppository or fleets enema. See your doctor to find out.Stipation; they range from not enough fiber, fluid, activity, to drug effects, to metabolic abnormalities, to anatomic abnormalities.

The best: The best meds for constipation are cheap: proper diet and proper fluid intake. Eat a high fiber diet and you don't need fiber supplements. Drink 80 - 100 ounces of non alcoholic, non caffeniated fluids every day. You must break bad habits if you want any relief. There is no magic pill that can replace a helathy lifestyle!

Generally I am: Not in favor of chronic laxative use. A hi fiber diet along with 80-100 oz of caffeine free/alcohol free fluid per day usually corrects the problem. You are approaching the age for colon screening and if the above doesn't work for you after trying for 2 weeks minimum, you may be a candidate for a colonoscopy even at age 46 or at least an evaluation. Tlk with a colon and rectal surgeon or GI doctor.
