Physical Therapy: Have you seen a therapist?  If you have not, they can be a great resource that is relatively inexpensive.  They could perform a deep tissue massage coupled with stim and ultrasound that can serve to improve your symptoms.  Ice and activity modification along with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory may help as well. Consult your local ortho for eval and prescriptions.

Chest pain: Intercostal muscle inflammation can cause chest pain and breathing problems but, lots of other things of different physiologies also can cause those.

No: You need to uncover the cause of the arm numbness.  Some thoughts with chest symptoms, could be pectoralis minor syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, but other nerve issues could be considered.  A neurologist may be needed.  The muscle strain is most likely secondary to the arm issue.

Could be: This could be muscle. As the child gets larger there is more risk of a strain. I would give it time before I would be concerned

Get an X-Ray: Try advil or Aleve (naproxen) for 10 days, if still hurts get an xray done to rule out rib fracture.

Chest pains: Regardless, could be only muscle pain. However, pain in your chest is a serious medical condition. It is always a red flag and appointment with your PCP for re-evaluation or a cardiologist is warranted. Take care.

Follow RICE, ie:: Rest, ice it, compression bandage and elevate. Decrease all movements to a minimum and take pain meds + a muscle relaxer for a few days. Support (with a hand or a cushion against the chest) when coughing or sneezing, to reduce the pain.
If no better see your pcp.

Yes: Coughing can be associated with muscle strain, rupture and even broken ribs.  Most of the time cough is a good mechanism to keep the lungs clear of secretions; if your cough is too forceful you can sustain muscle injury.  Sometimes health care providers will give you medications to decrease the intensity and severity of cough for this reason.
