Sxs: Appendicitis pain can start with mild pain around the belly button. The pain worsens over time. It can become sharp with loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting & possibly a fever.  The pain usually moves toward the right lower quadrant of abdomen. Bouncing or jolting will often make the pain worse. Appendicitis can  have varying presentations. Go to er for severe abdominal pain.

You cannot: If you suspect that a 4 yr old may have appendicitis they should be examined by a doctor.  If they are having abdominal pain, the abdomen is tender, they are vomiting, cannot lie still, then these are suggestive symptoms that an exam would be beneficial.

If worried, see doc: The classic symptoms of appendicitis are abdominal pain localizing to the right lower quadrant (rlq) of the abdomen, some nausea and vomiting, and lack of appetite. On exam, there is rlq tenderness. If the appendix has ruptured, pain and tenderness may be throughout the abdomen. Labs generally show elevated white blood count. Abdominal ultrasound or ct scan are increasingly used for dx.

Stomach Flu: It tends to run it's course. Be gentle with your GI tract. Start with clear liquid like water, soda that is clear, or sports hydration drinks. Work up to solids with bland foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, gelatin, or chicken. Avoid alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, dairy & high fat foods. Rest.

Bloody stools are not usually associated with gastroenteritis. According to the CDC, viral gastroenteritis usually has a duration of 1 to 10 days (depending on the specific virus). The average is 1 to 3
