Person to person: STDs are spread from person to person in various ways. Some through transmission of fluids (gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, HIV). Others are spread through contact (Herpes, syphilis, HPV). One of you would have to have an STD to give it to the other. If neither person has ever had any sexual contact of any kind then they can not spread and STD.

Unlikely: Transmission of an std via masturbation (self or with partner) with hands is highly unlikely.  However, one could potentially transmit infections if there were any kind of rash or open sores on the hands.  A herpetic lesion on the hand would be an example.

: A person with herpes outbreak is shedding more virus so you are high likely contract the virus during sex with the symptomatic partner but viral shedding still occurs in asymptomatic person and most people contract herpes this way.
