These infections start by introducing the germ to a new site; if the skin is intact, then no infection developes and the person may just harbor the organisim. Any break in the skin may introduce the germ into the deeper layers of the skin, thereby setting up the potential for a serious infection. Frequent handwashing helps.

Possibly: Some staphloccocus, such as mrsa, are not defeated by penicillins, and Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is of this antibiotic class. Mrsa is usually killed by sulfa in such antibiotics as septra and bactrim.  Bactroban is a good choice, but it is a topical ointment that only assists.  You need a good oral antibiotic to get the job done.
