Degenerative proces: What it MEANS as stated and what it MEANS in the context of the clinical situation may be 2 different things. Chondromalacia means degeneration of cartilage at the pinnacle point of the kneecap with swelling beneath the kneecap area.

what activities should i do with patella tendinitis?

Accepted Answer

Gentle stretching.: Once you've iced, taken some anti-inflammatories (like ibuprofen, naproxen) and rested a little (avoid running and jumping initially after an injury), then you can work in some gentle quad stretching and strengthening exercises.  Eccenentric quad exercises work well.  Things to avoid: deep lunges.  Lunges don't make kneecaps happy.  Good luck!

Minimize impact: Patellar tendinitis is also known as "jumper's knee".  Activities that involve any impact or jumping need to be avoided.  Activities such as swimming are recommended.

Depends: The severity of your knee injury that caused the tear of the medial patellar retinaculum tear will determine the length of your recovery.  Physical therapy can be very beneficial to aid your recovery and speed your return to "normal" activities. If you have not seen an orthopaedic surgeon yet, it would probably be worthwhile for you.

Low Impact: If this was your first dislocation, at 40, you are unlikely to have another. You need to undergo rehabilitation (physical therapy), if you have not already to reduce your chances of it happening again. You should be fine for low impact activities such as walking, easy biking, some eliptical machines. Until you have completed your therapy- i would avoid running and cutting activities.

Arthroscopic surgery: If it has been present for a long time, and has not responded to conservative treatment , then arthroscopic surgery is warranted.
Have you tried a cortisone injection? may help.

Varies: This all depends on your progress with therapy, your patellar tracking/stability and your quad strength.  This varies from patient to patient. Work hard in rehab and follow the advice of your doctor and therapist.

Sometimes: Occasionally, in bad cases you can see a bony traction spur or fragmentation at the inferior pole of the patella. Mri would also show it, but mriis better for diagnosing acute patellar tendinitis.
