Depends: If you are spotting mid cycle between periods, it is likely due to ovulation.  If you are spotting off and on and not having periods, then it is likely anovulatory breakthrough bleeding - and you should see your doctor for treatment options.  If you are spotting off and on and having regular periods, you need to see your doctor as you may have a polyp, infection, fibroids, or endometriosis.

Probably pregnant: Initially the amount of HCG is low so it may not be detected. But it rapidly rises. And there it is. Now you have to decide. Do you want to have a child at this time in your life or not? The earlier you decide, in case you don't, the better. Good luck, either way!

hi i've been spotting on and off for over a month now. why? and what should i do now? im kind of nervous about what could be wrong.

Multiple causes: There are lots of possibilities here.  Main ones are 1.  pregnancy 2. anatomic reasons or 3.  endocrine reasons.  For 1. rule out pregnancy with home test(urine).  For 2.  your doctor can perform tests to rule out polyps, fibroids, etc.  For 3.  you may not be ovulating and your lining is slowly breaking down and leaking out.  A progesterone challenge can be used to clear out the lining quickly.

Plan B: Light pink spotting off and on after plan B is normal.  Your next menstrual period may come at expected time or a bit early. Your next period might also be more or less heavy when it comes.

Probably normal.: I would guess the shot you had was depo-provera, the birth control injection you get once every three months. Irregular bleeding is, unfortunately, reasonably common after that injection. It may lessen with time. If it becomes a continuing problem, your gynecologist may sometimes suggest short-term estrogen medication that may help.

Endometrial breakage: Hormone fluctuations and endometrial (lining of the womb) premature shedding may be causing the spotting. If the next period is the same scenario, see your MD.

Positively pregnant: You are positively pregnant "somewhere". It could be an ectopic pregnancy(tubal) which are often faintly positive. With three positives, a MD visit is needed immediately to rule out ectopic pregnancy as they can rupture with significantly dire consequences.

Possible: It's possible you are going though menopause, but you still should be evaluated for your abnormal bleeding to make sure nothing bad is going on.

Thin lining: You could have a very thin lining (endometrium) due to the long use of a progesterone-dominant contraceptive.  Break through bleeding can occur in that situation.  Definitely check a pregnancy test to rule that out.  A sonogram could tell you if the lining is thin.  A polyp can cause irregular bleeding but you would need testing (sonohysterogram) to diagnose that.  You may need estrogen add back.
