No Blood to Spleen: A splenic infarction occurs when there is not enough blood going to the spleen to give it nutrients & oxygen its cells need to survive. Anything that cuts off blood supply to the spleen can cause an infarct. Ex. Trauma causing blood vessels to be destroyed, sickle cell anemia & other problems that lead to clogged arteries going to the spleen, autoimmune disease, blood cell disease, emboli, etc.

Yes, but unlikely: A very large splenic infarction can be fatal, but this is unusual. The underlying cause of the infarction needs to be determined, and treatment suggested. Atrial fibrillation or other heart rhythm disturbance is a common cause of splenic infarction.

Doctor: I assume this was diagnosed as a result of CT scan of the abdomen after ER visit. You need prescription medicine for pain relief but you are already on Lortab .You have Factor V Leiden which is a cause of splenic infarction. Be sure a doctor is following you.Good luck.

my husband has a very large splenic infarction caused when they had to embolize his splenic artery.  does his spleen need to be removed?

Not necessarily: Is he having a lot of pain?  Is the original issue that required arterial embolization still active?  How much of the vascular arcade was embolized?  It is in your husband's best interest to keep in touch with the doc who performed the procedure.

i understand that when blood flow has been cutoff to the spleen it is a splenic infarction.  how long can one live with this if no surgery is done?

It's not fatal: You can infarct whole chunks of your spleen and it'll grow back; the infarct ends up as a little white shrunken divot. You won't know it's happening. Infarcting the entire spleen is unusual except in sickle cell disease, where it's usually gone in childhood with most folks none the worse apart from being more vulnerable to pneumococci (get immunized) and other bacteria (be vigilant).

ok i had a spleenic infarction the dr told me basically it was a ruptured spleen and should get better and it still hurts after 8 months ?

Follow up: A splenic infarction is different than a ruptured spleen. An infarct is likely a blood clot that caused part of the spleen to lose its blood supply and die. A ruptured spleen is a broken or fractured spleen usually from an accident or injury that would result in internal bleeding. Both can cause pain. You may need to have a new examination with your doctor and have tests for your spleen again.

Sickle cell disease: Any enlarged spleen is susceptible to infarction. Common causes are sickle cell disease and bacterial endocarditis. Some infarcts may be silent and others may cause pain immediately.
