Dr. can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep). A couple days of throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) can lessen pain.

Several: I always encourage warm salt water gargles, drinking plenty of water through the day, and sleeping with a vaporizer at night (keeps throat moist if you are a mouth breather). This article may help.

Common ... cold?: Upper Respiratory Tract Infections are very common and typically viral and self limiting. If symptoms are worsening after 2 weeks, or you develop fever, breathlessness, or productive cough see your GP for review.

Probably covid: Covid symptoms include Fever, cough, headaches, sore throat, shortness of breath, muscle/body aches. If you have two or more of these symptoms there is a good chance that you have Covid. A Test will only provide documentation, it will not change the way the symptoms are treated. Self-isolate. Use pain reliever for headache/throat pain, get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids. Do not travel.

Possible: It is possible, but it could also be a syndrome known as oral allergy syndrome. It might also just be a side effect of the acidic nature of the orange itself. An allergist can test you to determine if you are truly allergic.

See below: Mostly likely viral infections or allergies but sometimes people can be carriers or strep in very low quantities.  These people can be checked for strep with a throat culture when they have no symptoms and if the result is positive, treat with another class of antibiotic that covers the entire bacterial load in the throat.  This will cover the strep.

Side affects: Zithromax is an over used antibiotic that is not risk free.
If the cough is productive and you have a fever, then an anitbiotic may be indicated.

Need exam: Sorethroat can be from infection or reflux. Some infection may require antibiotics. Need examination.

Tips: Hydrate well.  Consider using a warm air vaporizer. Mix several teaspoons of honey into herbal tea  with a squeeze of lemon juice.  Or make tea with 2 tsp of marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 minutes).  Drink several times a day or as needed to relieve coughing. See a physician if your cough is not resolving, difficulty breathing or temp &gt; 104.
