The most stable stool that goes around a toilet is a little looster, if you feel you must teach him now. If he feels insecure or scared,  he can regress to diapers or have toileting refusals. If you want him to watch you from a safe place, target a few cheerios or tinkle targets (from amazon) with your stream.

You can train him to do both ways, or one particular way if he feels that's better. 3 years old is the average age boys start to train, and generally he will follow whichever model he finds easier. Sitting makes less mess, but standing is going to be easier in the long run, and you have to get there anyways.

Some 3 yo who spent years peeing in a diaper may feel pressed to try something new.Squatting to poop &amp; changing to pee is also confusing to some. If you know of a simple reward like computer time or videos to use as an inducement he may be more willing to try.
