Could be both: First stop smoking! this is an irritant to the airways and can cause a wheeze. An infection can cause inflammation to the airways which could make you wheeze.  Take advantage of the wheeze and stop smoking and see your doctor. All that wheezes is not asthma! meaning many things can also cause wheeze.

Several things: Asthma is not a respiratory infection. Infections often- but not always) can be easily diagnosed with blood tests, chest xrays and other symptoms that a physician can make the diagnosis. Asthma is not an infection and its symptoms are not always the same as an infection.

Depends: If you have nose and throat congestion that could inlamed the eustachian tube and therefore you could hear muffled for the duration of your infection.

CXR findings: Some chest infections can damage lungs - bronchiectasis at a young age can lead to having asthma and other problems later on.  Some infections like TB can cause a walled off healed infection called a granuloma.  Pneumonia can sometimes cause scarring as it heals.  The significance of these can vary from nothing to significant.  Check with your doctor to be sure.  Good Luck!

Cough: Sometimes it is hard to know if you just have a cold or something more serious.  I usually tell my patients to be seen with persistant fevers, difficulty breathing, wheezing, cough productive of blood or a cough that worsens.  Without a chest xray and examination you can't tell.

Evaluation: Shingles is caused by a varicella-zoster virus and staph pneumonia can be associated with this virus. This can be serious. She should be evaluated.

It is better: It is extremely beneficial to cough during bronchitis illness. A course of antibiotics and albuterol inhaler can help prevent  pneumonia. Have plenty of bed rest, take fluids and carbs for fast energy, advil (ibuprofen) for fever and generalized achiness.
